A mother’s instinct is one of nature’s most incredible phenomena, and dog moms are no exception!
This brave Pittie mama, frightened and alone, sought refuge in an abandoned house in St. Louis, Missouri, when it was time to deliver her puppies.
She chose the house hoping to protect her litter, unaware that being isolated in a dark, cold place far from food and water wasn’t the best decision.
Alone with her newborns and no resources, the determined doggo mom desperately needed help—and help was on its way.
Rescue Mission: Hope Arrives Just in Time
The compassionate team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis learned about the struggling Pittie and her puppies. Volunteers Natalie and Donna, seasoned rescuers, responded immediately.
Armed with snacks and kind words, they called out for the dog. After a moment, a small, wary head peeked out from beneath a mattress.
Emaciated and desperate, the mother dog cautiously emerged, lured by the promise of food.
Once the mama was safely secured in their jeep, Natalie and Donna returned to the house to search for her pups.
Six Healthy, Chunky Puppies
Despite the pitch-black cold and challenging conditions, the team discovered six tiny, healthy puppies hidden beneath the mattress.
Tragically, one puppy had already crossed the rainbow bridge, but the remaining six were miraculously in good shape, save for minor skin infections.
“One mama, six babies, and another who had crossed the rainbow bridge. They were living in this pitch-black, very cold, boarded-up house. She was so hungry and thirsty, and her little babies had skin infections. But they are all safe now, thank God,” the rescue team shared.
The puppies, despite their circumstances, were well-fed—a testament to their mother’s dedication and care.
“For as thin as she was, the puppies were all chunky and happy,” Donna explained.
Meet Vicky Veggie: The Sweetest Mama
Back at the shelter, the mama dog, now named Vicky Veggie, showed remarkable friendliness right from the start.
Unlike many rescue dogs, she didn’t show aggression to protect her puppies. It was as if she instinctively trusted the humans who saved her little family.
Once her puppies were weaned, Vicky Veggie moved to a loving foster home to prepare for her forever family.
Meanwhile, her puppies received medical care for their skin infections and were eventually placed into their own forever homes.
A Happy Ending for Vicky Veggie
After months of care and love in her foster home, Vicky Veggie found her perfect forever family.
In a heartwarming Facebook post, Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared the news:
“Vicky Veggie is adopted into the most loving family in the world. They give her all the hugs and snuggles she’s been dreaming of. Congratulations, sweet girl… we couldn’t be happier for you.”
Once a stray dog struggling to survive and care for her puppies, Vicky Veggie is now living her best life, showered with love and affection in her new home.
Her story is a beautiful reminder of the power of compassion and second chances.
