In Bixby, Oklahoma, a peaceful night took a surprising turn when Bonnie Moriarty was startled awake by an unusual noise.
At first, she thought her dog and cat had gotten into a scuffle. But what she didn’t expect was an unexpected visitor making its way into her bedroom.
Moments later, she was stunned as her cat darted into the room, followed by a wild coyote instead of her dog.
The Intruder Reveals Himself
“I woke up, and the cat and the coyote came running into my room. It was still dark,” Moriarty recalled.
Startled, she let out a scream and quickly flipped on the lights, illuminating a tense scene: the coyote, frozen in the corner, startled and unsure of his surroundings.
Hearing her screams, her dog rushed in, barking to protect his mom.
With her husband out of town and the kids sleeping upstairs, Moriarty was on her own. The commotion woke the kids, who came downstairs to find out what was happening.
She later suspected the coyote had followed her cat inside after noticing that the back door had been left slightly open.
“He somehow just lunged at the door, and it opened,” she explained. Gathering her courage, Moriarty managed to leave the room and trap the coyote inside by closing the door.
A Safe Return for the Coyote
She immediately called the police, and within minutes, three officers arrived to assist. Carefully, they entered the bedroom, using catcher poles to gently loop the coyote and escort him outside.
Once safely removed, the coyote eagerly bounded back into the nearby woods, undoubtedly as relieved as the Moriarty family to be out of the house.
This was likely a confusing and scary experience for the coyote, too.
While coyotes may sometimes pursue pets, they rarely end up inside homes. In this case, the chase likely got the better of him, and he found himself in unfamiliar territory.
Fortunately, the unusual encounter ended with everyone safe and sound—and the coyote with a lesson learned about unexpected midnight adventures.
